What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a condition which affects the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Melanin is the substance which gives colour to our hair, skin and eyes. Melanin is constantly being broken down and replaced so it must be replenished, and this is done by cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes manufacture and distribute the correct amount of melanin, but for people with vitiligo, this process is adversely disrupted and is affected by autoimmune. The most obvious signs of this condition are white patches on the skin where the melanocyte cells have failed to produce melanin. This can also affect the hair and eyes resulting in premature greying and albinism. Vitiligo affects at least one in every hundred people all over the world. It affects people of both sexes equally and all races. It can begin at any age, although about fifty percent of people with vitiligo develop it before the age of 25. Most sufferers are not born with vitiligo, although it can develop in early childhood. It can be a hereditary condition; it can be brought on by stress and sudden shock and can also be caused by some medications.

How does Vitiligo camouflage and scar camouflage treatment work?

Vitiligo camouflage and scar camouflage treatment is carried out using advanced micropigmentation techniques to implant pharmaceutical grade pigments into the superficial layers of the skin. This is done using various needle configurations that are suitable for the treatment once the skin colours have been carefully selected. Usually a palette of three to four colours, very close to the surrounding healthy skin is used to give a very realistic result. Scar camouflage treatment is suitable for facelift scars, breast augmentation scars and other scars caused by surgery, accident or self- harming. All scars need a minimum period to fully heal and this can be from six to 12 months. Vitiligo treatment can only be carried out when the condition is stable. In any case, any trauma can activate the condition, and this will be explained, and waivers must be signed for.

What will I expect in my consultation and treatment?

A thorough consultation will be carried out prior to any treatment and you will be made aware of any possible risks. Consent forms will be filled out accordingly and all pigments and needles used will be logged. Vitiligo and scar camouflage treatments are a real confidence booster and the importance of these procedures should not be underestimated. These treatments should only be carried out by experienced technicians who understand the application of colour pigments within the vitiligo condition.

The procedure will be carried over several sessions depending on the severity of the condition and how much work is required. The procedure is carried out with larger needle configurations for faster deposit of pigment. Before and after photographs will be taken to monitor the progress of your treatment and will be reviewed fat our week intervals to allow the correct healing period in between treatments.
